Train tragedy in Spain: at least 50 dead and dozens injured after two trains collide. Traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line stopped

A serious train accident in central Spain on Wednesday morning left at least 50 dead and dozens injured. Two trains collided near the town of Urda, in the Castilla-La Mancha region, about 150 kilometers south of Madrid. Following the impact, traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line was interrupted, and Spanish authorities and emergency teams were mobilized to the scene of the tragedy, according to information published by El Español.
The accident occurred in the area between the towns of Mora, Orgaz and Urda and involved a Renfe train and one operated by Iryo, which was traveling on the Madrid–Seville route, announced the Spanish railway infrastructure administrator, Adif.
Initial reports from authorities indicated that several people were injured. Later, emergency services in Castilla-La Mancha announced a toll of at least 50 dead and dozens injured.
"There has been a collision between two trains, there are people injured," the mayor of Urda, where the accident occurred, told Spanish television.
Footage from inside one of the trains involved and broadcast by Madrid television shows the extent of the impact. It shows the wreckage of a carriage and fragments engulfed in flames.
According to El País, Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente interrupted his participation in an event in Madrid immediately after learning about the accident.
The president of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, also suspended his schedule and announced that he was traveling to the scene of the tragedy.
"I am following with attention and concern the train accident this morning in Urda. I am on my way to the scene of the accident, as is the rest of my Government. I have suspended my schedule", García-Page relayed on X.
The Urda accident follows a series of rail tragedies in Spain since the beginning of the year. On January 21, 46 people died in another accident on the same railway line.
