VIDEO | Where Ivan Ceban has not invested for years, the Government intervenes. Dan Perciun announces the modernization of Gymnasium no. 86 and investments of over a billion lei in schools in Chisinau

The Government of the Republic of Moldova is preparing investments of over one billion lei to modernize the school infrastructure in Chisinau, in the period 2026-2030, with the aim of reducing overcrowding in educational institutions. The announcement was made by the Minister of Education and Research, Dan Perciun, in a video message filmed at Gymnasium No. 86 in the capital. According to the official, the institution has a capacity of 600 students, but is attended by only 200 children, a situation he attributes to the lack of investments from the Chisinau City Hall. The Minister claims that the Government has already contracted additional financing of 50 million euros for the modernization of 21 schools, including Gymnasium No. 86, so that they become more attractive to parents and contribute to reducing the pressure on overcrowded schools.
"We are at Gymnasium 86 in Chisinau. We continue to present the investments that the Government has already made for the period 2026-2030 to modernize the school infrastructure in Chisinau. It is no coincidence that we chose this gymnasium because today, although it has a capacity of 600 students, only 200 children study here. It was an institution that for many years in a row did not benefit from investments from the city hall and has reached the state you see it in today and parents do not want, for very objective reasons, to send their children here, putting additional pressure on other educational institutions in the city", said Dan Perciun.
The minister specified that Gymnasium No. 86 is among the 21 institutions for which additional funding has been contracted. Some modernization works have already been completed.
"In this regard, this year, in the first semester, we contracted for this institution and for another 20 schools an additional financing of 50 million euros, approximately 2,5 million euros per school. At this stage, all the windows were replaced here with the support of the Czech government, they also benefited from the modernization of the school cafeteria, when we started feeding all the children in grades 5 and 9, and they also had those investments for lockers in primary classes, in order to unload school bags", the minister added.
Dan Perciun emphasized that investments in infrastructure will be additional to the annual funding of schools, most of their expenses already being covered by the state budget.
"The government has an ambition to come up with over 1 billion lei in investments in schools in the municipality, in addition to the funding that comes year after year for the activity of educational institutions throughout the country and in Chisinau in particular. 90% of all expenses for schools in the city come from the state budget, it is an important thing. And additionally, we come up with these targeted infrastructure modernization projects with a very large volume, the main objective for Chisinau being to contribute to reducing the problem of overcrowding as quickly as possible, and Gymnasium 86 is part of the medium-term solution to reducing overcrowding in the city", said the Minister of Education and Research, Dan Perciun.
