Alexandru Tănase, after the sabotage in Romania: "It would be a dangerous illusion to believe that such scenarios do not concern us or that the distance between the war in Ukraine and the apparent calm in Chișinău constitutes, in itself, a guarantee of security"

Former President of the Constitutional Court, Alexandru Tanase, warns that the Republic of Moldova should not treat the risks associated with sabotage operations and hybrid warfare superficially. The statement comes after the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) announced the identification of a coordinated sabotage network from the Russian Federation, whose members are suspected of causing the fire of September 14, 2026, on the Carfil industrial platform in Brasov.
"The Romanian Intelligence Service announced that the fire that broke out on September 14 on the Carfil industrial platform in Brașov, near a weapons factory, was caused by a sabotage network coordinated from the Russian Federation. The same network also had other military and industrial targets in Romania and Europe in its sights.", wrote Tanase.
In a Facebook post, Tănase drew attention to the tendency to ironize warnings about Russian threats and minimize the risks to regional security.
"For some time now, it has become almost fashionable to make fun of the notion of "hybrid warfare". To mock warnings about the Russian threat, to treat any reference to Moscow's operations as a manifestation of paranoia, and to look down on those who speak of real risks to our security. But, as Baudelaire observed, the devil's greatest trick is to convince you that he does not exist. And when you end up laughing at a threat just because it does not resemble the conventional image of war, you risk not even recognizing it when it knocks on your door.", said Tanase.
The former magistrate emphasized that the way in which the sabotage in Romania was allegedly implemented does not change the nature of the threat, even if it was not a direct attack with drones.
"The fact that Russia did not send drones to a weapons factory in Romania, but, according to investigators, used saboteurs to cause a fire, does not change the substance of the problem", the former president of the Constitutional Court mentioned.
He warned that the Republic of Moldova should not consider itself immune from such scenarios, given that similar operations can take place even in a NATO and European Union member state.
"And if such operations are possible in Romania, a NATO and European Union member state, which nevertheless has security institutions capable of identifying threats and reacting, what should we, in the Republic of Moldova, understand? It would be a dangerous illusion to believe that such scenarios do not concern us or that the distance between the war in Ukraine and the apparent calm in Chisinau constitutes, in itself, a guarantee of security.", mentioned tanase.
The former president of the Supreme Court of Justice concluded his message with a question addressed to those who minimize these risks: "What more needs to happen? People have to die in such an attack? Only then will we accept that the threat is not imaginary and that the war waged by Russia against European security is not limited to the territory of Ukraine?"
On Monday, October 26, the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) announced that, in cooperation with internal and external partners, it had identified a coordinated sabotage network from the Russian Federation.Three foreign citizens are being investigated, suspected of causing the fire on September 14 on the industrial platform in Brașov. According to Romanian authorities, the network also had other military and industrial targets in Romania and Europe in its sights.
