Romanian Prime Minister Luca Niculescu on the Union with the Republic of Moldova and the possibility of a "plan B". The decision belongs to the citizens on both banks of the Prut

Romanian Prime Minister Luca Niculescu does not rule out the possibility of the Union of the Republic of Moldova with Romania, but claims that such a decision must come from the citizens of the two countries. Asked if the Union could represent a "plan B" for the Republic of Moldova, the head of the Bucharest Government stated that, for now, the priorities are the rapprochement of the two states and the European integration of the Republic of Moldova.

"There are many links between our countries and obviously there is a debate that exists and that can exist in some contexts," said Luca Niculescu in an interview with TVR Moldova.

Asked if he sees the Union as a possible "plan B", the prime minister stressed that the realization of such a project depends on the will of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and Romania. "It will be very clear if, and when, the citizens of the two countries want it," Niculescu replied.

At the same time, the Head of the Bucharest Executive stated that the current priority is to strengthen relations between the two states and bring the Republic of Moldova closer to the European Union.

"For now, we want to bring Romania closer to the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Moldova closer to the European Union and, moreover, to create these bridges, to create even more connections between us. And the answer to the question I asked myself depends on the citizens of our countries," concluded the Romanian Prime Minister.
