VIDEO | From polystyrene for construction to exports to Europe. A company from the Republic of Moldova has modernized its production with EU support: investment of three million lei
An investment of approximately three million lei, of which 500.000 lei represents financial support from the European Union, has allowed a company from the Republic of Moldova to modernize its production process and meet the growing demand for thermal insulation materials. This is "Polistiren-Construct", a company with 60 employees, which produces polystyrene for construction and special boards for underfloor heating. The new equipment automates an important part of the activity, allows the reuse of material scraps and contributes to the development of a business that has managed to reach foreign markets with its products, including Zugo.md reports.
The investment is one of the examples of European support for Moldovan entrepreneurs, in the context of the Growth Plan of approximately 1,9 billion euros made available to the Republic of Moldova by the EU.
Modern equipment and automated production
The company "Polistiren-Construct" specializes in the production and sale of thermal insulation materials used for insulation of homes, roofs and floors. In order to expand its capacities, the company purchased a new production line, financed both from its own resources and through European support.
"Our company offers solutions for thermal insulation of houses and roofs. We are producers and importers of expanded polystyrene, we also produce granules and we are already the only producer on the market of grooved boards for underfloor heating. The value of the purchased equipment is about three million lei, of which 500.000 lei represents the support offered by the European Union", says Dragoș Ursu, the company's sales manager.

The company employs 60 people. The technological process involves processing raw materials to obtain polystyrene blocks, which are subsequently cut into plates of various sizes and thicknesses, depending on customer orders.
With the installation of the new machine, several stages of the process were automated, reducing the need for manual intervention and streamlining employee work.

"Basically, the human factor only intervenes until the block is brought here and mounted, and from here everything is automated. It is cut to the thickness we need, then all the sides are straightened and aligned", explains Dragoș Ursu.
The investment also includes equipment for recycling polystyrene scraps resulting from cutting. The materials are shredded and can be reused in construction, which allows for waste reduction and more efficient utilization of the raw material.

Products made in Moldova, also in demand abroad
The modernization of production capacities was also driven by the increased demand for the company's materials. In addition to customers from the Republic of Moldova, the company has registered orders and requests from other European countries.
According to the company representative, compliance with European standards is essential both for product quality and for access to foreign markets.
"Everything we do here is according to European standards. Soviet standards are no longer relevant for us, so we work with European certificates and requirements. We have exported to Ukraine and Romania, but there have also been requests from individuals from countries such as Germany or Italy. We have shipped grooved boards by minibus, because purchasing and delivering them here is much more cost-effective than buying them from Germany or Italy.", the company representative states.

Over 9.300 enterprises supported by European programs in 2025
The investment made by "Polistiren-Construct" is part of a broader effort to support the business environment in the Republic of Moldova, through European programs and financial instruments.
The European Union has made available to the country a package of approximately 1,9 billion euros through the Growth Plan, intended to support economic development, investments and reforms.
According to the EU data presented, in 2025 alone, over 9.300 small and medium-sized enterprises benefited from programs financially supported by the European Union, with the value of investments exceeding 169 million euros.
This support contributed, according to the same data, to the creation of approximately 20.000 jobs and the increase in exports of Moldovan companies.
In the case of "Polistiren-Construct", the results of the investment are reflected in the modernization of the technological process, the reduction of material losses and the possibility of producing more efficiently for customers in the country and abroad.
