Vasile Tofan: The relationship between the Republic of Moldova and Romania is a brotherly one. The union cannot be reduced to a simple plan B

Moldova and Romania are linked by the same history, language and culture, and the relations between the two states go beyond the level of a strategic partnership, being truly fraternal. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan made this statement at the Euronews Enlargement Summit 2026, emphasizing that the Union with Romania is a fundamental issue for the future of the Republic of Moldova and cannot be treated as a simple backup plan.

"We have a lot in common with Romania. The same history, the same language, the same culture, we were once the same country. Romania is, by far, our greatest friend and I believe that our relationship is more than strategic, but truly brotherly," said Vasile Tofan.

Referring to the Union's perspective, the Prime Minister stated that such a decision cannot be conditioned by the success or failure of other strategic objectives of the Republic of Moldova.

"Sometimes, people say that the Union with Romania is our plan B, but I believe that such fundamental decisions about the future of statehood cannot be relegated to a plan B," the Head of Government emphasized.

At the same time, Vasile Tofan specified that the achievement of the Union must be based on the will of the majority of the population, and currently there is not enough support for this option. The Prime Minister compared the situation to that of a possible accession to NATO, noting that the authorities must respect the citizens' choice in such matters.

The Head of the Executive reiterated that the current priority of the Republic of Moldova is European integration, an objective that would allow the two states to come closer together within the same political and economic community.

"Our Plan A is to reach the European Union and there to unite with Romania, as part of a common Europe," said Vasile Tofan.
